9 September, 2011: Enriched Colony Cage System. A video is attached showing an Enriched Colony Cage System for layer hens. The New Zealand draft Code of Welfare for Layer Hens proposes that the current cage system of production be replaced by the Enriched Colony Cage system.
This system will become law in European Union countries from 2012 and is also supported for introduction in the USA by the American Humane Society.
This video is from a million-dollar trial undertaken by the Egg Producers' Federation of New Zealand and the MAF Sustainable Farming Fund over the last three years in Waikouaiti, Dunedin, to evaluate the commercial viability of the Enriched Colony Cage system in a New Zealand commercial setting.
The Enriched Colony Cage system allows birds to nest, perch and scratch
- three of the most important natural behaviours for layer hens.
